Franchise fatigue continues with 'Men in Black' and 'Shaft'

Jun 17, 2019

LOS ANGELES — Brand familiarity isn't everything when it comes to attracting audiences to the multiplex, and Hollywood is learning that lesson the hard way this summer with a slew of underperforming sequels and reboots. That so-called franchise fatigue came to a head this weekend with the releases of "Men in Black: International" and "Shaft." The writing may have been on the wall after neither an X-Men movie ("Dark Phoenix") nor a Godzilla movie ("Godzilla: King of the Monsters") could get moviegoers enthusiastic enough to turn out. But this weekend, down over 50% from last year, is the worst yet....

Versace to Emporio: Men's looks shine, literally, in Milan

Jun 17, 2019

MILAN — Milan Fashion Week for spring/summer menswear previews has started with a slightly different rhythm, with many mainstays not showing this season. It is a sign of the times that fashion houses are seeking new ways to reach their audiences, and slotting menswear into womenswear shows by now is old hat. Gucci and Bottega Veneta are among the houses choosing that path, and skipping the June round of shows. And this year, Pitti Uomo in Florence got a boost as the chosen venue for Ferragamo, which normally shows in Milan, and Givenchy, which makes Paris its home. Prada went...

LOS ANGELES — O.J. Simpson launched a Twitter account with a video post in which the former football star said he's got a "little gettin' even to do." Simpson confirmed the new account to The Associated Press on Saturday, saying in a phone interview while on a Las Vegas golf course that it "will be a lot of fun." "I've got some things to straighten out," he said. He did not elaborate before he said he had to go and ended the call. Simpson has generally kept a low profile since his release from prison in October 2017 for robbery...

Swift sang her hit song "Shake It Off" at the New York City bar with "Modern Family" actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who...

'Gosh!' Cult comedy 'Napoleon Dynamite' turns 15

Jun 17, 2019

SALT LAKE CITY — The cult comedy Napoleon Dynamite turns 15 years old this month, a milestone for a movie that became an early breakaway hit in today's era of pop-culture geek celebration. The movie that created the "Vote for Pedro" T-shirt and made Napoleon's disgusted exclamation of "gosh!" into a 2004 catchphrase is celebrating its anniversary this month. Made for just $400,000, it would ultimately gross over $46 million as a word-of-mouth hit before Twitter and Facebook took off. The movie told the story of its socially awkward title character, who ultimately triumphed because of his quirks rather than...
