Something's missing in HBO's new film on John McCain's life

May 25, 2018

NEW YORK — It's no coincidence that the words "President Trump" aren't spoken in "John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls," the HBO documentary on the Arizona senator that debuts on Memorial Day. There's enough to talk about, from candidate Trump's belittling of McCain for being taken prisoner in Vietnam to the senator's rejection of Trump's promised repeal of the Obama administration's health care law. McCain's family doesn't want Trump at the 81-year-old senator's funeral when he succumbs to terminal brain cancer. The filmmaking family of Peter Kunhardt and his sons, George and Teddy, felt that including Trump would detract...

Scenes cut from 'Show Dogs' over resemblance to sexual abuse

May 25, 2018

LOS ANGELES — Two scenes are being cut from the family movie "Show Dogs" after complaints that they resemble real-life sexual abuse, the movie's distributor has announced. In the movie, a police dog goes undercover at a dog show to catch animal smugglers. In one scene, the dog is told to go to his "zen place" when he objects to having his testicles touched by a show judge. In another scene, the dog is urged to overcome his resistance to being touched to become a champion. Parenting bloggers first raised objections to the scenes, which they said resemble tactics used...

Boston Globe probes text allegation against top editor

May 25, 2018

BOSTON — Boston Globe executives said they're investigating an allegation that the newspaper's top editor had an inappropriate text exchange with a former employee he once dated. Hilary Sargent, a former editor for Boston.com, tweeted a screenshot of a text exchange she said occurred between her and Brian McGrory. In the exchange, she says McGrory asked her what she wears when she writes. The screenshot doesn't show the names of the people texting and it's unclear when the texts were sent. In a memo sent to employees Wednesday, the Globe's managing director and president said they began investigating the allegation...

'Arrested Development' co-stars apologize to Jessica Walter

May 25, 2018

NEW YORK — Jason Bateman and Tony Hale are apologizing for comments they made in defense of their "Arrested Development" co-star Jeffrey Tambor, who has been accused of harassment on the show's set. In a series of tweets Thursday, Bateman says his comments were "wrong" and that it seemed like he was "condoning yelling at work." He adds that he's "incredibly embarrassed." Bateman was reacting to a cast interview in The New York Times in which actress Jessica Walter alleged Tambor verbally harassed her on the set. Bateman responded in the interview that "a lot of stuff happens in 15...

Judge suspended for courthouse affair with social worker

May 25, 2018

BOSTON — A Massachusetts judge who engaged in sexual acts with a social worker in his courthouse chambers will be suspended indefinitely, the state's highest court ruled Thursday, setting in motion the judge's possible removal from the bench. The Supreme Judicial Court said Judge Thomas Estes' "grave, willful and repeated wrongdoing" has damaged the public's faith in the judicial system. "The sanction we impose is not severe because we seek to punish the judge severely, but because ... we seriously question whether he can command the respect and authority essential to the performance of his judicial function," the judges wrote....
